In the 70`s Jonne` and Ernie Davenport both represented the Eastern Cape for Showjumping and Eventing, respectively. When the children went to boarding school, they gave up competitive riding to spend the weekends with them at home. Because they both loved horses they turned from competing horses to breeding them, and thus the Davenport Warmblood Stud (DWS) was started. Their goal was to breed horses with German power and the athleticism of the thoroughbred. The stud started with 2 Dolerit mares and a young Graveur filly from Namibia. Lancer xx was the stallion, as at the time Compass Line xx was doing really well in the ring. In fact he went on to win the SA showjumping championships and tied for first place in the SA Derby. That was back in 1982. We were ecstatic when we acquired Pyrmont xx years ago and even more so upon realizing that Pyrmont xx full brother was Seville xx, rated by Anneli Wucherpfennig as good as Merely a Monarch, the horse she jumped for Great Britain. He won the Grand Prix at the Rand Show and tragically died very young. Pyrmont xx was a very good racehorse and could boast beating great racehorses like Elevation xx and Sentinel xx. In 1996 we imported a 6 month colt, Rex Grannus Z. He is a grandson of the mare of the century Ratina Z and out of a Grannus mare who jumped A grade in Germany. His sire Rex Z only produced 106 foals and already he has 10 internationals and half his progeny are not yet 8 years old!! Rex Z therefore has one of the best strike rates in Europe. Some of the progeny bred at DWS include Davenport Propaganda who is jumping international in France and came 2nd in the Dinard Derby beating Bon Ami and Belladonna. Davenport Pied Piper is international in South Africa of whom Candi Smith says, “I’ll never find a better horse.” He won the last leg of the World Cup in Cape Town in scintillating style with Ronnie Lawrence. Davenport Peter Pan won the Novice S.A. Championship with Flo Vernon. Pyrmont xx was by Jerez xx who is lying in pole position on sires list in S.A. of showjumpers, his progeny apart from Seville xx include: Stormfinch xx, winner of S.A. Derby, S.A. Grand Prix and S.A. championships; Quizzie Girl xx; Aegean xx etc. He also produced the brilliant eventers Barbadillo xx and Don Benito xx. The Davenport stud is situated in Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Karoo (see map below). Once the foals are old enough to be weaned, we move them to the farm where they grow up on the veld. This calcium rich area with internationally approved underground water forms the ideal situation for a horse stud. The stud is located on Libertas Trust ground consisting of 9,000 hectares of the finest Karoo veldt with summer rain, winter frost and is almost disease free. The veld is mixed Karoo consisting of a variety of grasses, bushes and trees each with its own unique amount of minerals, vitamins and proteins making it recognizably the best livestock area in South Africa.
