As I said in the last article Badminton winner Durlas Eile was ¾ TB by the Thoroughbred Artist’s Son xx, who also sired the Grand National winner Quare Times xx.
The following year Durlas Eile was in the Irish team that won Gold at the first World Eventing championship at Burghley.
The other team members were Virginia Freeman Jackson with the full Thoroughbred Sam Weller xx (3rd individually), Penny Morton with the ¾ bred Loughlin and Tommy Brennan with the ¾ bred Kilkenny, later on to distinguish himself with Jimmy Wofford in the USA at two Olympics.
They were a phenomenal team, without doubt the best Event team Ireland ever had until the World Championship Silver medal team at WEG at Tryon in 2018. As all these horses had also showjumped successful at Grade A level, 1.50/60m, it is also likely they would have been competitive in Tryon.
Both Loughlin and Kilkenny were by the Thoroughbred Water Serpent xx, who also sired Jenny, the ride of Ireland’s Juliet Jobling Purser in the Mexico Olympics.

Water Serpent xx was the Heraldik xx of his time and also sired Piero DiInzeo’s wonderful pair of international show jumpers The Rock and Rockette, as well as the supersire Ideal Water xx, who was the dam sire of Bruce Davidson’s three famous Lion horses, Pirate Lion, Regent Lion, and Eagle Lion, his 1995 Badminton winner and top 10 in seven 5* events.

Ideal Water xx had a full sister Big Idea xx who was the dam of Mullacrew, an International Show Jumper, winning at such shows as Lucerne, Rome and Wembley and also the dam of the world famous Cruising, who was a 5* stallion for both Show Jumping and Eventing.
The other Irish stallion that is talked about in the same breath as Water Serpent xx is Nordlys xx, who also happens to be the sire of Mullacrew.
So Cruising’s huge success is not surprising when looked at genetically. NB: New DNA analysis shows that Cruising is in fact 66% Thoroughbred

Nordlys xx sired an enormous number of good horses, including Munich Olympic Show Jumping Gold medalist Ambassador ridden by Graziano Mancinelli. He was yet another horse originally ridden internationally by Tommy Brennan.
Nordlys xx also sired the international jumpers Gone Away, ridden by Raymond D’Inzeo and the mare Abbeville, ridden by Tommy Brennan and Nelson Pessoa, who renamed her Miss Moët.
Of course we all want to find the next Water Serpent xx or Nordlys xx.

I had high hopes of St Ledger winner Julio Mariner xx, the Thoroughbred stallion who was exported to Holland from the United Kingdom
He had wonderful paces and suppleness and his genes were to die for. With a limited number of mares he was a success as a jumping sire, producing the international jumpers Marinero, Resolute, Eurocommerce Lima, Harley, Dinky Toy and Ingmar, and over 40 licensed sons, including the KWPN Pythagoras and the Holstein stallion Jefferson.
But I feel he could have become a legend if standing in Ireland.

He was by the super athletic Epsom Derby winner Blakeney xx, whose grandsire was Hugh Lupus xx, the grandsire of Master Imp xx, and he also had Hyperion xx, Precipitation xx, Pharos xx, Fairway xx, Tourbillon xx, Blandford xx, Chanteur xx and Wild Risk xx in his pedigree.

Looked up many 9 generation pedigrees in Horsetelex and on the Australian IDSHS page. Also some pedigrees of old time Holstein horses which show how early breeders started using TB genes / English genes.
